I’m going to start this Clif Bar post with a bit of a confession – I’m not very good at meal prep. As much as I’d love to have the dedication and organisational skills to make all of my meals before work, I never do. In fact, I’m often found scrambling around the kitchen in the morning.

Always trying to assemble some sort of breakfast on the go. As such, I can sometimes make choices based around convenience rather than actually thinking about nutrition.

As someone who attends the gym semi-regularly, I decided it was time to take a bit more care. I was done with haphazard meal choices. I started to research which types of foods I should be consuming to get my nutritional values on the go.

Why an Energy Bar?

Time and time again, I was pointed in the direction of energy bars. An energy bar is a protein filled bar designed to give you a welcome boost of energy. This can be either as a meal replacement or supplement, a snack, or a pick me up after the gym.

I was quite taken with the idea of a bar that could replace an entire meal. Offering something simple to grab on the go. It had to be something nutritional and full of goodness. I wanted something tasty and simple that would keep me full until lunch. I was told that an energy bar would be just what I was looking for.

Choosing Clif Bar

I did a LOT of research before settling on the energy bar of my choice. So many energy bars promised delicious flavours. However, after a closer look at the ingredients they were either full of sugar and offered nothing organic or wholesome. One brand which consistently came up trumps in terms of reviews was Clif Bar.

Regardless of the flavour or finish, I saw so many exceptional reviews for Clif Bar. People claimed that they completely fill you up and give you a serious boost of energy. Plus, it seemed the ingredients were organic, wholesome and some of the flavours were vegan friendly too.

I decided to opt for a White Chocolate and Macadamia Nut Energy Bar from Clif Bar. Amazon had some seriously great reviews for this product. I read through a lot of different websites and this flavour was consistently championed by the public. I was very excited to get my teeth into one!

My Expectations Of The Clif Bar Energy Bar

Thanks to the glowing reviews and the Clif Bar website – I thought the product was going to be good. However, I’ve tried several different ‘breakfast bar’ or ‘protein bars’ before from a whole host of different brands. So far, I haven’t ever yet been convinced enough to repurchase.

I tend to find the consistency of these bars pretty difficult to chew. I also find they either don’t have much flavour, or simply don’t hit the spot when it comes to hunger. For me, the entire purpose of choosing an energy bar was to find something that would replace a meal.

I didn’t want something that would have me starving again in half an hour! Though I believed that the product was going to be delicious, I was pretty sceptical. I didn’t know whether or not it would keep me full until lunch time.

As you can see, there are lots and lots of vitamins and minerals in this product, which is great. The description claims the bar consists of 16% rolled oats and 5.2% macadamia nuts. I was pleased with this level of the primary ingredients.

It was also great to see a lot of soy products in there. This bar is vegan friendly and I think that’s great! There are a fair few sugary elements to the product, however. It contained brown rice syrup, cane syrup, dried cane syrup and cocoa butter.

It seemed like there were quite a lot of sweetening elements in the product. However, many of the products listed were organic – which is great. I try to always buy organic ingredients where I can, so I was very happy with this. There’s no hidden nasties in here and on the whole I’d say the contents are pretty good.

They come in at 260 kcal per bar, which is pretty good for an energy bar of this kind. They’re definitely lower in calories than a lot of similar products I’ve seen on the market. They’re full of organic ingredients too.

Receiving the Clif Bars

Thanks to my trusty Amazon Prime, the Clif Bars arrived the very next day. This meant I didn’t have to wait to give them a go. I got 6 bars for £7.50, which means each bar is £1.25. Compared to the retail price of a lot of similar protein bars and energy bars, I was pretty impressed with this price point.

Disappointingly, the bars literally arrived in a clear plastic bag. The presentation left a lot to be desired. However, the delivery was speedy and the products were in my fridge instantly ready for breakfast the next day. For the cost, I think the presentation was fine, but it would have been nice to have them in a presentation box of some type!

Trying Them Out

I decided to use the Clif Energy Bar as a meal replacement for my breakfast to test if they really could fill me up until lunch. My first impression was that you get a really decent sized bar for the price.

I was also very impressed with how chunky it was. It was actually pretty nicely presented too, with white chocolate drizzled along the top. Makes a change from a beige, boring bar!

The texture of the product is really impressive. It’s full of oats but is somehow still really moist. It has a lovely consistency and is nice to eat. It doesn’t stick to your teeth and is chewy without being drying. I didn’t feel like I was incredibly thirsty after eating it – so that’s good.

The flavour is absolutely delicious. You really get the macadamia and white chocolate notes coming through, but without the product being overwhelmingly sweet. In summary, it tastes good and the texture is great.

The Verdict?

This bar absolutely exceeded my expectations. Not only did it taste great (a welcome change from my experience with protein bars), but it seriously kept me full until lunch. I usually have to keep many healthy snacks in my desk to keep me going until lunch time.

However, I ate my Clif bar in the morning and genuinely didn’t even look up until lunch. I hadn’t even noticed I wasn’t hungry. I ate the Clif Bar for breakfast 6 working days in a row and consistently enjoyed them. Not only that, but they consistently kept my hunger at bay too!

If you’re looking for an energy bar that you can grab on the go then I couldn’t recommend the Clif bar any more. Whilst it is pretty high in sugar, it makes for an excellent meal supplement and genuinely does keep you full. It makes a particularly great breakfast on the go and you know all of the ingredients are natural and organic.

Plus, it’s suitable for vegans too! Whilst I wouldn’t ordinarily recommend skipping a wholesome breakfast, the Clif Energy Bar is a great substitute if you have to choose. The energising properties would also make this perfect for those who want to refuel after endurance exercise, or grab something quickly after the gym. It really does taste delicious, and is the perfect thing to keep in your cupboard for when you need a meal substitute or a boost of energy!
