Why have I decided to review the Mac Cream Colour Base?
I was first introduced to the Mac Cream Colour Base by my wedding make up artist. I knew that I wanted a pop of highlighter and a subtle glow. That said, I didn’t want to end up with the frosty look of really obvious highlighter in all of my photos!
She used this Mac Cream Colour Base in Pearl to great effect, and I purchased the product a few weeks later. It is technically sold as an eye shadow. However, most of the artists and reviewers online use it for many purposes. I adore this as a highlighter because of its pearlescent effect.
I used it on my honeymoon backpacking in Cuba, and I loved the effect. It is subtle enough for daily use even in a casual setting. You can also build it for a more dramatic effect for night time and dates.
So What Is it?
Mac describes this product as: “A creamy formula that imparts colour and a sheer, dewy finish with various effects.
I found this product descripton to be completely accurate: Versatile and multipurpose, cream colour base can be applied directly to bare skin or layered over foundation, moisturiser or powder. Smooth and easy to apply with a brush, sponge or fingers – colour effects range from a light veil to highly dramatic, depending on method of application.”
It really does give a wee hint of colour and goes on with a dewy and sheer finish. You can also get it in other shades. It is so much more than an eye shadow – you need to try this for a variety of purposes.
Texture And Application
I find the texture absolutely lovely, and the cream base allows you to control where it lands on your face, with no drop down. You can use it solely as an eye shadow, but I highly recommend using it for other purposes. Apply on your cheekbones, brow bones, tip of the nose, temples and above the centre of your lips.
I have used this with a stippling brush and with my fingertips, and the effect is nice. However, my make up artist used the side of her thumb (below the joint) and pressed it into the cream. She then used her thumb to press and build the product on my cheek bones as a highlighter.
As an eye shadow, this makes a great base on which to layer powders. I also really like the way that it looks when I layer it in the corner of my eyes. This really brightens and opens my eyes, making them look wider.
Unlike a powder highlighter (which I find are often filled with large flecks of metallic that look obvious), this product melts and smooths nicely. I also find that it lasts a really long time, outlasting the other make up on my face!
Purchase Experience And Price
I always love shopping at Mac, and this was no exception. My first experience of the Mac Cream Colour Base was when getting my make up done for my wedding at the Spitalfields Market location in East London.
I went back 2 weeks later to purchase the cream colour base. I found the make up artists on staff to be extremely professional, talented and friendly. A few other good things about shopping in store at Mac? They have a recycling program, and you can return 6 empty containers for a new full sized lipstick.
Also, if you spend more than £35 pounds (2 products, really) you can get your full face of make up done for free. You need to book this in advance, and it is really well worth it!
- Silica –
This mineral can be found in sandstone, clay, granite, and in many plants and animals. You’ll often find it used in cosmetics because of its versatility. It is an anticaking agent, bulking agent, abrasive and opacifier.
- Jojoba esters –
Jojoba esters are a mix of the esters from jojoba oil, and the result is a rich wax. This is an excellent emollient, and helps to blend and bind cosmetics ingredients together.
- Shea Butter –
Shea butter is prized around the world for its rich texture and hydrating effect. An ideal natural moisturiser, it is found in cosmetics of all kinds.
- Beeswax –
A natural preservative and anti-bacterial agent, beeswax is a time honoured cosmetics ingredient. It also acts as a humectant, drawing moisture into your skin.
- Iron Oxides –
These naturally occurring mineral deposits are used in cosmetics to impart a metallic glow.
Full Ingredients list:
I should make it very clear that apparently the full ingredients list is available on the side of the package (as is mandated in the EU). However, by the time I realised this I had thrown away the package. I was planning to get the ingredients list online (as I do with almost every other product I review).
This was easier said than done with Mac! None of their ingredients lists can be found online. I finally emailed them and received the list this way. This seems strange and a little shady to me. Why not list them online? What are you afraid of, Mac? Nothing contained within was too toxic, so what gives?

Health Hazard Scores
I ran this product’s ingredients through the EWG (Environmental Working Group’s) Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. I couldn’t find this exact product in the database, so I instead entered every ingredient into their search bar. This product has more than 30 ingredients, and most were listed as a “1.” A “1” rating means that it has no known health hazards.
That said, one had an alarmingly high rating. Aluminium powder ranks as a 5-9 (depending on usage), and counts as a “high hazard” for human use. The site lists this as a “known human nervous system toxicant.” I imagine that this gives the product some of its signature shimmer?
There are a few other colour pigments with ratings 1-4. This means that they can be moderately hazardous depending on the amount used and how. Over all, I do not think that this is a real hazard. I think that it is a safe product to use on facial skin.
Packaging And Container
I always like the Mac packaging, which I think is timeless and chic. The boxes are sturdy without containing too much extra paper or materials. However, I am not thrilled with the containers as of late.
I have been using Mac shadow, blushes and highlighters for decades, and they have always had a clear hard plastic window at the top. Lately, these round plastic inserts have been popping out and refusing to pop back in. Maybe this is just me? It has happened to me three or four times this year.

Overall Results And Daily Experience
Overall, I really do recommend this product and I think most make up lovers will enjoy it and find it has many uses. A gorgeous and subtle colour, a rich yet light texture and long wearing effects – love it.
I think that most make up wearers will end up reaching for this every day, because you can use it to jazz up almost any look. If you are going on a long holiday and can only choose a few products to take with you, this is definitely a multitasker.
Eye shadow, highlighter, bronzer (if you choose a deeper colour), contour aid – you can use this for everything. Give it a try – you’ll love it. And best of all – if you don’t, Mac has a great return policy. They will take it back with no questions asked and you can exchange it for something you prefer more. You can’t lose – go for it.
