I have used many different foundation primers in the past, but none have ever come close to achieving the results of Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer . This primer has completely changed the way that I think of primers in general.
What Are Primers?
Primers are meant to help your foundation and concealer last a longer time on your skin. They are meant to lay down a ‘priming’ layer that should ideally fill in pores and fine lines so that your foundation looks flawless.
As little as five years ago these were not common, but now nearly every beauty brand has at least one primer on offer. Even drugstore brands are now offering primers.
In the past, I have used primers from MAC, Benefit (The Porefessional and That Gal!) and Smashbox (the first one I ever tried). While I am a sucker for extra steps and products, I often found that a layer of day cream and powder worked just as well as these primers. This is certainly not the case with the Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer .
Applying The Optical Illusion
I start off with the Urban Decay Quick Fix Spray to hydrate my skin. While my make up artist promised me that this elixir will help my make up to last longer, I am slightly dubious. That said, I love the cinnamon-y smell (a review of this product on its own is in the works).
After letting this spray dry (approximately 3 to 5 minutes), I pump one full pump of the Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer onto the back of my hand. If I am feeling fancy, I use a special brush to apply this, but usually I just use my fingertips! Either one seems to work the same.
The feeling is absolutely lovely. It is silky and creamy at the same time, without leaving an oily residue on my skin. Within approximately a minute it soaks in very nicely, leaving a pearlescent sheen on my skin.
Even at this stage I can see a difference. The product claims that it “reduces fine lines and makes pores seem to vanish – for a gorgeous, porcelain-like texture.” I can see that it has a definite airbrush effect, and it creates a smooth surface on which I can lay down my foundation.
The product is lightly coloured pink (they say that it includes “optical blurring pigments for beautifully perfected skin”). Urban Decay also claims that “creates an optical veil of scattered light, giving skin a soft-focus effect.”
In this case, there is definite truth in advertising. While I am usually dubious of claims like these, the Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer exceeds this expectation by far.
Adding Foundation On Top
Next, I lay down my foundation with either a brush or my fingers. In both cases I can notice a huge difference when it comes to how the product spreads onto my skin. I have been using a lot less product, as it glides on and seems to provide much more even coverage.
Without this primer, the foundation needed a lot of blending with my beauty blender in order to prevent it from looking streaky and patchy. While I still need to blend with my brush, I do not find that it takes me as long.
This has made a huge difference. I then add my concealer and a light dusting of MAC translucent powder and I am good to go.
I have noticed a big positive difference in how long my foundation lasts on my skin. By the end of the day, I still feel like I have a fully made face. While I do always touch up my red areas (T-Zone) if I am going out at night, this has made a big difference.
Ingredients In The Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer
One of the things that I love most about Urban Decay is how open and honest they are about all of their ingredients. They never claim to be ‘all natural’ or completely organic, but they do include heaps of gorgeous natural ingredients in their products.
The Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer includes moisturising argan oil, brightening rosehips and antioxidant meadowseed oil, as well as Vitamin E. They also list all of the synthetics on their ingredient list (located on their website as well as on the box).
All ingredients are save with a safety score of no more than 2 (out of 9), except for the following:
Packaging And Bottle
I have to say that I love the design on the box – it is a gorgeous purple/pink with a stylised rose design. Inside, I was greeted with a package insert (including suggestions and ingredients) and the bottle of product. Optical Illusion comes in a clear bottle with a metallic gunmetal cap and base – it is very sturdy.
The Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer bottle comes with an airless pump, and this will help me to get every last squirt of product out of my bottle (very much appreciated). The airless pump also helps to keep air and bacteria out of the product. This means that it will last for a long time even if you don’t use it every day (but you will use it every day! It is addictive).

Purchase Experience And Price
I bought my Urban Decay Optical Illusion Primer at the Urban Decay shop in Spitalfields Market. Since I spent more than £35, I was eligible for a free make over. This made me so happy, and I looked amazing! My make up artist was truly gifted.
That said, even if you purchase this online, you will be impressed. Make sure you buy it from a licensed vendor to avoid fakes. I was recently ripped off with some fake Limecrime lipsticks, so do be careful.
This primer is £40.00, and it is worth every penny. I don’t want them to see this and raise the price. Even if they did I would still buy it! I am now completely hooked. All in all, this is one of the best products that I have ever reviewed.
