Why have I tested the Vega One shake?

I have been using Vega products since the early ‘00s, as one of my best friends worked for the company. She used to give me with big boxes of their products, from supplements to energy bars and shake mix. I was a very active yoga practitioner, and so I really valued the free gifts to fuel my practice!

Years later I started buying the products at market rates, and found out how expensive they are! Still, even at such high prices (£25 for 450 grams), I think that Vega products are worth the pennies.

As a brand, Vega has been around since 2001. They stress that they are “guided by the idea that alkaline-forming, plant-based whole foods are the true future of optimal health – and that nutrition is the foundation from which to build a stronger, younger-feeling body.”

While I don’t know if I feel ‘younger,’ I do like Vega. I respect their brand and I like the effect their products have on my mind and body. I feel quite virtuous when I consume them!

    Spirulina

Spirulina is a blue-green algae in the salt water lakes of Mexico and across Africa. It is a superfood rich in vitamins, minerals and carotenoids.

  • Chlorella

Chlorella is a fresh water green algae and detoxifies the body. It is a valuable source of protein, iron, chlorophyll, magnesium and amino acids. Many credit its tiny size for its supposed ability to bind to heavy metals and rid the body of toxins.

  • Hemp

Hemp seeds are a fantastic source of plant-based protein. They are loaded with 20 amino acids including the nine essential ones that your body is unable to produce on its own.

I use this Vegas shake in the morning before heading out to work or for a walk, and I do like the taste (although I think it is too sweet). It gives me a real boost of energy, but I do find that I have to eat something alongside the shake.

Maybe it is just me, but I have to eat something solid to feel fulfilled. I usually pair this shake with a piece of toast and a hardboiled egg, and this is perfect. 

I do know that some people use this as a diet aid and a meal replacement.

At 160 calories per serving, this could really work. I personally like to add some fresh fruit and yoghurt to the shake and whip it up in my smoothie maker. This pads it out a bit, and improves the taste and texture. This definitely makes me feel more satiated.

I am always cautious about health benefits touted by brands of shakes and powders, but must admit that Vega is the exception. They really seem to take great care and effort in each of their products. I truly feel that I can trust their brand. These are just a few of the health benefits that Vega lists for this product.

If you’re watching your weight, a suggested serving of Vega One is just 160 calories. They claim, “you won’t feel hungry 20 minutes after drinking Vega One, since 20 grams of protein and 6 grams of fibre help to keep you feeling fuller.” I do not find this always to be the case – I really only feel full for a long period of time if I have something solid. The shake alone won’t do it for me!

Gluten Free, Soy Free, and No Added Sugar

I think that for most people, gluten free is a complete hoax. All of those rushing out to remove gluten from their diets because a blogger said they felt better without? I’m seriously shaking my head. That said, some people legitimately cannot ingest gluten (Celiac etc.), and so this is a nice option! Vega One is also soy and sugar free.

Vegan 


With more and more people turning away from animal products, it is great to have a vegan protein option. Anyone can enjoy Vega.

Do you like drinking a shake in the morning? Have you had luck with smoothies and shakes keeping you full until lunch? If you answered yes to these questions, you and I are very different!

But all jokes aside, this is a truly great product filled with effective and expensive ingredients. Even though I still need some cheese or an egg, the effects really are great. 

This shake blend makes me feel energised in the morning, and puts a ‘bounce’ in my step.

That said, I do find it very sweet, and this throws me off. I wish that they would make a ‘half sweet’ option for people like me who do not have a sweet tooth at all. This might also be because the chai is such a cloying flavour to me – I will try basic vanilla next time.

There will be a next time – and I think you should give it a try. Ideal for anyone trying to feel healthier, get more vitamins (and veggies) and fuel their day.
